With not much ambition beyond staying busy, former journalist Ben Tripp does a bit of carpentry and small-time private investigating. Mostly stray dogs, straying husbands and general snooping around the Bitterroot Valley of western Montana. Pretty tame stuff until now.

Scott Grady, a paleontology student, is missing, and a gorgeous professor hires Tripp to do some digging. Now someone is trying to kill the professor, as Tripp sifts his way through the competitive and cutthroat world of academia.
