Jeff Kerwin had spent his early years in the Spacemen's Orphanage in the Terran Trade City on Darkover. Yet he'd never felt he'd belonged there for he was haunted by dreams of the world surrounding the Terran city, a world he somehow felt had once been his.

Shipped back to Earth at the /1' age of twelve to live with his paternal grandparents, Jeff still felt like an outsider, and despite his grandparents' kindness, he could not escape the conviction that only on Darkover would he discover who he truly was.

But when years of planning finally brought him back to the planet of the Bloody Sun as a member o the Terran Spaceforce, he found himself an outcast yet again. For he had both the red hair of a Comyn lord and the bastard strains of Terrani in his blood, and though he carried a powerful Darkovan matrix jewel he had no memory of how he had acquired it. Only if he managed to win the trust of the sacred Keepers and learn the secrets of their Towers, could he hope to unlock the mystery of his heritage. But if he did manage to win the trust of these powerful leroni, who lived apart from society, sequestered and unapproachable, would he then be accused of betraying them to his Terran masters?
