For seventeen-year-old Scarlet Jane, life is promising. As a star athlete and straight-A student, she has seemingly everything going for her. But on the night her life is meant to change for the better, she returns home only to find that her mother has been murdered--not by a person, but a monster.

Hospitalized with shock in her hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana, Scarlet thinks her life is over, at least until a strange man appears in her room. Though she is alarmed by his presence, he offers her two choices: to forget everything she has known and loved and become a new person, or to remember what she's seen and train to become a Hunter who can track down and kill the monster that butchered her mother.
