A string of murders hits the jazz community like a sour note. Its victims are those musicians who've traded the traditional sounds of the greats like Charlie "Bird" Parker for the newer, more marketable "smooth" jazz. But "Bird" lives on--at the expense, it seems, of a few unlucky transgressors.

Drawn reluctantly from the smoky clubs he calls home, jazz pianist Evan Horne has been recruited by the FBI to help put a spin on the killer's motives, and more importantly, predict where he'll strike next. But the tempo changes when the killer pulls Evan into a dangerous riff--a deadly duet that could end his career ... and his life.
