The Borders hold ancient ruins and wondrous artifacts. But they can be a horrible menace--those who venture too close risk the unpredictable pull of the Absences. Even Solomon Hawken, steeped in the lore and magic of the Text, fears the Absences and the changes they bring. When he is summoned home to Arcady, he learns that the Borders have again breached the family estate and his niece has vanished into the nothingness. With one brother locked in the Citizen's war against rebel forces and the girl's own father immersed in grief, Solomon must turn to a magic he can, scarcely control, in an attempt to save his family--and perhaps the entire world.
