Unable to cope with the murder of innocents, Amber has discovered that there are people in the world who are so evil that they deserve what she does to them.

She has taken on the role of an Avenging Angel, seeking out those who prey on the innocent and stocking her dungeon pantry with them. With the help of the vampires and a human who sees her as a form of Justice, she's learning more and more about the incredible powers she has.

Suddenly, however, she learns that there are others like her, grues that feed not only on the innocent, but seem to prefer feeding on children. Amber cannot accept this and decides that these other grues must be destroyed — but her very first encounter with them leaves her burned so badly that there is almost no hope for her survival.
