About This Book

Best friends can be dangerous. The past haunts the present, as Impey Dalrymple finds. Spectres are unleashed when she brings her old childhood playmate Natty Bell together with her new friend Lady Olga Brancaster.
For Natty, now a celebrity television interviewer, her request of Impey, to enable her to join Bisley Heath golf club, is simple; it's simply a matter of meeting the right people.
As a freelance journalist who works on a much more modest scale than her friend, Impey is not so sure. She fears Natty's ebullient presence may not be as popular at the golf club as she is on the television screen. Nonetheless, her introduction of her friend to the renowned champion Lady Olga Brancaster, President of Bisley Heath appears to be a success. The two powerful ladies strike a bargain. Olga will propose Natty for Bisley Heath in return for Natty using her television connections to research Olga's Russian ancestory.
Unbeknown to the girls however, Lady Olga is locked in a feud with the current Lady Captain. Ace player, the beautiful blonde Flick Challenger is fed up with Olga bringing in her elderly cronies, long past their best at golf. Flick wants to recruit her own buddies. Her ambition is that Bisley Heath may again be a champion golf club.
Flick calls a meeting of all the key lady players to discuss how they can thwart Olga's protegees. To her embarrassment afterwards, though, Hector, Lady Olga's black labrador dog, leads her on to the golf course where she finds Olga lying battered in a bunker.
This assault on the president plunges the club into a crisis. Albertine Fairclough, wife of a prominent member, who runs a detective agency, decides to investigate. Though initially reluctant, Impey agrees to use her journalistic skill as an insider to probe for information. She is unaware that Albertine has her own agenda; she too wants to join Bisley Heath, but Olga, to the chagrin of Albertine's husband, refused to propose her.
Meanwhile Petrushka, a Russian girl claiming to be a relative of Olga's, turns up at Natty's instigation. As Olga is not now available, Natty recruits Petrushka as an au paire to look after her daughter.
When Hector, Lady Olga's dog, disappears and threatening notes are sent to her friends, Impey fears for the safety of Natty's child. Is Petrushka the kindly person she appears to be, or has she some sinister motive for arriving to see Olga, as Natty's husband suspects.
Caught in the fray Impey has to use all her skilled knowledge of animal behaviour to sort out friends from enemies.
