About This Book

Tom Ryder has an offer he cannot refuse. That offer is an invitation to spend time with his brand new girlfriend at the home of her wealthy parents in the Adirondacks. The couple could have traveled together if not for their conflicting schedules. Ava leaves in the middle of the week, but Tom will have to wait until the following Saturday.
Tom has a couple of problems. Foremost, he doesn't have a car. Secondly, his bank account is almost nonresistant. In order to save a few dollars, he rents the cheapest car available.
Leaving New York City in the less than perfect vehicle, everything seems to be running smoothly. Despite finding himself on a desolate road only a few miles from his destination, his mode of transportation seems to have been a wise decision.
Thinking he can now relax, the car begins to sputter. Topping the next hill, it quits. Taking his coat and bag from the trunks of the now inoperative vehicle, he sets out walking to determine what is beyond the next hill and dale. Hopefully, he can either locate a phone or someone will give him a lift.
It seems houses are nonexistent along this stretch of road. There are very few cars going the opposite direction and none going in his. After walking a significant distant, he decides to stop at a crossroads. Although things are already bad and the weather is getting colder, matters get worst. It starts to rain. Then, a fog sets in.
He huddles, wet and cold while considering that the fog will make it impossible for a passing motorist to see him even if they're inclined to stop. His ears attuned for an approaching vehicle, shivering, he stares back in the direction from which he came.
After a while the fog begins to dissipate. For the first time in a long while he looks in the direction he intends to go. Several hundred feet away, on a drive indiscernible from where he stands, sets a very old car. Whoever or whatever is in the car has been observing him. Appearing to stalk him for what seems eons, the car finally moves forward. Driving slowly the driver stops and offers him a ride. However, Tom will regret accepting that offer. The occupant of that car will inject a world of misery into Tom Ryder's life in the days to come.

Excerpt from book:
As the car topped the hill and rounded the curve, I could see it clearly. My heart sank. The same ancient vehicle that just passed, had turned about and was returning. It still moved in the same creeping manner as when coming from the opposite direction.
I entertained thoughts of everything from gangsters to monsters and even ghosts as the bulky automobile neared. Would it pass the second time? God, I hope so.
Ever so slowly, drawing abreast, this time it stopped. Timorously, I backed away from the road to stare at the vehicle that now set motionless before me. I strained to see beyond the darkened windows. The engine purred so softly I could barely hear it.
I stood for what seemed the longest, wondering if I was in imminent danger. That seemed a good possibility, considering the actions of the driver. For several excruciating moments, I waited, expecting the driver to exit or lower the window. Neither happened. The driver made no effort to reveal him or herself.
