Helen and Patrick have faced many uniquely dangerous situations since they met. When a frightened girl appears on their doorstep, they suspect helping her will bring some unusual trouble. The girl, Maybelle, becomes an unexpected ally when Patrick crosses paths with a ruthless businessman and Helen acquires a mysterious follower. Those problems seem insignificant when Helen and Patrick learn the terrifying nature of what Maybelle was running from and find that they have become targets as well.
