Ledrad felt a wave of solace, as though a call of joy had reached him from somewhere beyond. All was not lost—the escape might be successful. He and his daughter would find refuge beneath the protective eaves of the Ancient Forest, forgetting the merciless gods, the Ethos, and the pain. They would be free, peaceful, and joyful. The feeling was too powerful to be stifled now—too powerful! With his whole being, he immersed himself in it and thought of the king of those bygone days who loved his people. He thought, breathing fervently, and his heart beat faster as hope glowed in his eyes."
