Pook's Common in the Cotswolds is a perfect place for Meredith Mitchell to return after several years abroad with the British Foreign Service. And Christmas promises to be a lovely time thanks to the warm welcome from her old acquaintance, Chief Inspector Markby, and from a new neighbor, Harriet Needham, a striking redhead with whom Meredith immediately feels a kinship.

Unfortunately, Meredith has barely gotten to know her neighbor when Harriet meets with a fatal accident at the Boxing Day Hunt--except that a number of witnesses suspect the tragedy was no accident. Meredith is inclined to agree, but it takes a little friendly persuasion to convince her friend Inspector Markby that it's up to them to expose the fiendishly inventive killer whose holiday tidings have brought anything but comfort and joy to their peaceful little village.
