The sorrow of leaving her beloved India after five splendid years is lessened considerably for vivacious Amanda Cavencourt by a thoughtful parting gift from her dearest friend: an exquisite statue of a princess carved from sandalwood. That very night, however, the statue is stolen by the notorious rogue known as the Falcon. Amanda wonders why a man employed by governments to undertake their most dangerous and delicate missions would indulge in petty thievery.
