The Civil War is over, and Deborah Marbury, with her crippled seven-year-old brother, is moving to Texas to begin a new life. But her vision of a "Promised land," a home left to her by her uncle, is instead a wreck of a house occupied by an intimidating Indian who refuses to leave.
