Daniel Killstraight is on his way back to the Comanche reservation after spending seven years learning the ways of whites at a special school back East. But he's met with a grisly homecoming: the hanging of his childhood friend Jimmy Comes Last for a horrific double murder. When asked by his old friend's mother to prove that her dead son was innocent, Daniel can't say no.

Caught between two worlds, Daniel struggles to carve out a place for himself and track down the truth. Reluctantly, he joins the tribal Indian Police and soon begins to believe that Jimmy's mother was right, that her son wasn't guilty. As he digs further into the crime, he uncovers something much bigger than murder…
