About This Book

The Tengu, red-skinned giants of the Hida forests, found her lying beside the River Sai unconscious and dressed in strange clothing made of tree bark. The giants found she had no memory of who she was or from where she came. They treated her as one of them, and she added to her wealth of woodlore while she was among them. Kaku the Shielder, on his way to the Seeker, was given the woman, who called herself Nanashi, meaning No Name. She proved to be a ferocious and effective warrior. Now Nanashi, feels she must answer a holy call from Amaterasu. Furthermore, her arch rival, an Okinawan woman who calls herself Shuri, answers the same call. Their quest is to find the storied hermit of Huziyosida and receive from him a key that is vital to the anointed of Amaterasu, Lord Masacado, who is destined to wrest the eight kingdoms of Kanto from the unholy Toh warlords. The two Called women leave the war junk Seicho Maru to journey by land to Huziyosida, The Seeker gives them amulets of green jade, promising that the jewels will give off heat when evil approaches. But Nanashi has no idea just how much she must give of herself to obtain the hermit’s key. Still, she has one unique strength. Without a name, she cannot be cursed by Lord Yami’s dark forces. What is the key? What must Nanashi learn? What must she sacrifice to gain the key? And how can a wooly mammoth help?
