Penniless and alone in the world, Coriander knows that life must have more to offer than drudgery in a Cornish orphanage and fending off the unwelcome advances of unscrupulous Ezra Follett. As though in answer to her prayers, Ralph Beringer, newly returned from the Napoleonic wars, brings news that his father's wine business now belongs in part to Corrie.
