As our nation recovers from the indignities and suffering of the Civil War, as it approaches its triumphant first Centennial Celebration of 1876, the proud Bouchard family continues to fight for its hard-won freedoms and to keep afire the legacy that is Windhaven.

Andy Haskins, the former Bouchard ranch hand, has been elected to the Alabama House of Representatives. But no sooner does he take office than he is approached by a lobby of corrupt carpetbaggers requesting that he sponsor an unethical land tax bill, as part of a swindle involving the Alabama-Chattanooga Line. Refusing to cooperate, Andy Haskins becomes enmeshed in a network of lies, murder, blackmail, and strange political bedfellows who threaten his life and bring Luke Bouchard and family to the brink of disaster...
