Katherine "Kat" Crandall is a red-haired tomboy, raised by her father to ride, rope, brand and shoot as well as any cowhand on their ranch. When she is about 20 her father dies suddenly. On the day of the funeral most of her hands quit, claiming they don't want to work for a female. Not long after, some of her cattle are stolen. Then three strangers appear from nowhere, asking to sign on. Can she trust them? Especially the tall man who calls himself Laredo, who has a past he wants kept secret. Stephen L. Brooks was born and raised in Maryland, and decided to be an author while in fifth grade. He is retired after over thirty-five years with the Federal Government. He is the author of several mysteries. This is his first western, and is writing a horror novel. Other works in several genres are in various stages of progress. He and his wife have no children except for a succession of cats.
