Sharing a passion for motorcycles and the open road, the motley assortment of bikers called themselves the Retreads, and on any other day Raine Kennedy would have given them a wide berth. As a dutiful daughter and a dentist for Seattle's under-ten set, she hardly seemed the motorcycle type.

But that day Raine Kennedy had taken a twenty-four-hour vacation from her life. When Retread Aldo Johannson took her arm and ushered her toward his friends, Raine looked into the tall man's face and saw something she scarcely recognized, it had been so long -- freedom.
