Clearly they had nothing in common. She was an M.I.T. graduate; he a high school dropout. He was an accepted member of the Fayetteville community; she was simply passing through on her way to far more important places. He was a country boy; she was a sophisticated city woman. How could she explain that Eric had managed to solve complex problems that had stumped the nation's most erudite engineers?
