The year is 1903.

Lisa Shaw is an English orphan from Leeds who is sent to Canada as a "home girl".

They were children and young people that were "exported" from Great Britain to her colonies in Australia, Canada, and South Africa to be adopted and employed as domestic help.

After a rough time in Canada, Lisa believes life is about to change for the better when she returns to England.

At the crowded docks in Liverpool her path crosses with that of the handsome Norwegian Peter Hagan.

Love blossoms but fate seems determined to keep them apart, and they are separated by a vast continent.

When they do meet again Lisa's life is linked to another man, a pioneer in the film industry.

Lisa is forced to make a terrible choice.

Can she drop everything to be with Peter?
