In 1941, Jake Ellinson, a talented big-band trumpeter from the Bronx, volunteered as a paratrooper rather than playing it safe in an army band because of his sense of responsibility as a Jew to fight against the Nazi onslaught, and to prove his own courage. Forty-five years after his death on a Belgian battlefield, the last letter he wrote surfaces, revealing a story that had been hidden for years.
