The prospect of vacationing in a private artists' retreat off the coast of Maine both exhilarated and worried young Jill Conrad. She wanted to get away from New York, from the memory of her last play. Of course, she barely knew the man who had invited her—and his insistence that she stay at least a month at the art colony seem unusual, but not really frightening.

It wasn't until Jill arrived at Cliff House that her doubts mushroomed into fears.
