Only recently returned from glittering Vienna, where she had been feted by the most dazzling and influential citizens of Europe, Catherine Fothinby found a summer at her, cousins' country home in Kent dull beyond measure.

Not even the appearance of a well-to-do and sturdily handsome local suitor, Sir Andrew Tarleton, could make up for the sophisticated galas, the sparkling conversations, the elegant fashions and lavish feasts she so missed.
