As a newly qualified vet, Emma Bowden wanted to work with a good practice, and be independent. But her father's need for vital surgery meant she was needed to look after his veterinary surgery, along with a locum. If that were not enough, her boyfriend Peter persistently proposed, despite her refusals.

The stress had Emma snapping at locum Laurence Mitchelmore, who retaliated by seeing her simply as a spoiled brat.
