Korea, 1941. The Japanese occupy the country, and two young Koreans grow up in very different worlds. For Sei-Young Shin, a young man born into a poor family in the rural south, it is a time of oppression. The Japanese have issued strict prohibitions against the Korean language, religion, and food. For Heisook Pang, the daughter of a prosperous family from the north, life is easier.
