When Joe Dixon is released from Folsom Prison, he vows never to return. But Joe, a lifetime petty criminal, has few actual skills and no prospects. And so, Joe turns to the oldest grift of all: spreading the gospel. Mail-order ministry license in hand, Dixon rents a ramshackle storefront, calling his new church "The Word." Much to his surprise, Joe finds the local community very interested in his strange little ministry. But with the neighborhood cops paying regular visits, the local media snooping around, and a burgeoning flock who desperately needs his guidance, Joe's scheme isn't working quite as planned...
