The beautiful debutante Lady Valeria Netherton, at her grandmother's suggestion, left England to visit her redoubtable cousin, the Duc de Laparde. The spirited young beauty feared no matchmaking: She would never marry an aristocratic Roue who would surely pursue his affaires de coeur as energetically after marriage as before.

Valeria's impetuous half-brother persuades her to impersonate a woman of dubious repute in Biarritz, so that he can enjoy seeing the cancan in a den of iniquity.
