In conference with one of his fellow students and a senior advisor, Lundgren discovers a plot by the Russians to knock out America's strategic missile defense system and lay the nation open to a full-scale nuclear attack. Working with high-ranking security agents from the United States and the U.S.S.R., the Caltech students survive a deadly confrontation and defuse the situation, only to be unwittingly recruited into the upper echelons of the American intelligence community.
