Jessica Harding didn't think her life could get any worse. And then it did. Late to her senior prom because her falling-down-drunk mother knocked out a tooth, Jess finally arrives at the school gymnasium to find it eerily empty. Her best friend and the only person on earth who cares about her has disappeared, and Jess is about to lose her mind. A few other stragglers show up late, but at first, none of them believe her when Jess insists something bad has happened. In the same breath, they're too scared to venture back into the school to find a phone, and the only one courageous enough to go inside with her is quiet and nerdy Will Taylor. It's both a curse and a blessing when Will arrives late to the prom to discover all his friends have vanished; all of them except for his life-long crush Jessica Harding. At first, Will and the four other students who arrive late believe there's a logical explanation, but when FBI helicopters descend on their sleepy town within twenty minutes, they realize something is terribly wrong. Nevertheless, even after hours of questioning by grim and disapproving authorities, when Jess wants to sneak into the gymnasium to look for clues, Will is all-in. After all, life in a federal prison is a small price to pay for a night of sleuthing with brave and gorgeous Jess, who's finally noticed he exists.
