Trying to outrun ghosts from her past, Willamina de Coucey joins an English entertainment troupe, posing as a man in hopes of keeping her identity anonymous. After nursing a lone survivor of a mysterious ambush back to health, Willamina must fight her growing feelings for the warrior nicknamed 'Adonis', as they threaten to expose her hidden femininity. By the time Garret Fitz Hugh recovers from his near mortal wounds and regains his memory, he already finds himself falling in love with the angel who nursed him back to health. He attempts, and fails, to hide his feelings as he tries to interpret her charade.
