  On the way to a romantic date at the beach, Zoe is chased by a man who exhibits most mystical behavior. Before her toes touch the sand, his very presence stirs the rediscovery of a truth she purged from her memory long before she understood the implications. She is an alien, a hybrid human/shape-shifter. As if it isn't shattering enough to wrestle with understanding how biologically this reality could be true, she's also confronted with a more urgent issue--everyone she cares about, family and friends, are missing.
   Once she reaches the shape-shifters' secret citadel, it's filled with frightened hybrid children just like her. There she learns that the hybrids' very existence has disrupted the Splinterings' truce. Their devastating civil war threatens to erupt again. This time, though, it could spawn the extinction of the human race. Zoe, however, exhibits signs that she alone may have been granted a lethal mental weapon. Now, despite deception from those she loves and betrayal by those she trusts, the fate of everyone who lives on this planet depends on a girl who lacks the one thing she needs most. A warrior's grit is as elusive as her hope of success.
