Orphaned as a young girl, Martha was taken into the care by her grandfather -- and soon more than earned his name for her: the "tempestuous petticoat".

From their first meeting it was clear that life with her crotchety relative was not going to be easy. And matters were hardly helped when Martha discovered that the old man had dealings with smugglers and was helping to ferry French aristocrats across the Channel.
