Agent Cleveland knows his life is for the good of the Compound. He has undergone the rigorous change to become a Scout: he is thoroughly devoted to following his orders. But a chance encounter with a particularly talented Subject awakens the person he once was. He longs for the life that had been taken from him.

The rogue Scout and two Subjects plan an escape. All three men have their own reason to run: Subject Thomas feels he must find his noble destiny. Subject Donald wants to protect his wife and young daughter, Roberta.
