About This Book

This novel follows the fortunes of two Russian Jewish families who settle in Liverpool at the turn of the century. The Katzes are Orthodox, scholarly, and poor, devoted to tradition. The Gordons are socially mobile, opting for material gain at the price of cultural loss. The families' fates become intertwined as they live through two world wars, and Depression, and the rise of British fascism.
