The Civil War is finally over, and the former Confederate states not only must deal with the economic hardships but also the bitterness that comes with defeat and the eradication of their previous way of life. This is especially true of the Killigrews—once one of the most prosperous, well-respected families in Seven Devils, Arkansaw, now fallen on hard times. Life is difficult for Penelope Killigrew, forced to raise her daughter, Hester, and her young son, Francis, alone save for Mammy Joella, a former slave who has decided she is too old to try and start anew. The Killigrews are struggling, but somehow managing to get by—until they find themselves being haunted by a living ghost.
