Veronica and Charles Hallard are an ideally happy young married couple living in Lagos where Charles has his job. When the gathering war-clouds in 1939 force Charles to sent Veronica to England ahead of him. But six months later he doesn't arrive as expected - his boat is torpedoed and he has been drowned on his way home. With the news she is almost broken hearted.
