About This Book
This book is the fourth in a series of The Scientist on Assignment. The book is based on a journal I kept on the trip. I traveled to the remote island of Papua, Indonesia, and stayed with missionaries who lived there. The missionaries were long-time friends, Tim and Lori Ruth, and Caleb, Titus, Esther, and Jael. Tim works there with his missions organization and flies people and supplies into remote jungle villages. He lands on runways that are oftentimes no more than a grassy field on the side of a hill. During my trip to Papua, I got to fly with him several times, meet the village people, missionaries, and experience those exciting landings. But my experiences, as exciting as they were, became more dramatic when I met my old spy buddy on the trip to Papua. Twisting my arm, he got me involved in another one of his scientific spy assignments for me. It involved an assignment into these remote jungle places in Papua. It made my trip scary and exciting both at the same time. Would I meet up with some of those Islamic, militaristic terrorists? I thank the Ruth family for hosting my stay, allowing me to live with them for three weeks, showing me parts of Papua, and treating me like family. They are a wonderful family.
