Miss Penelope Bryant was possessed of a practical nature. Therefore, to avoid certain disaster, she convinced her dull but dependable fiance to elope with her to Gretna Green. Likewise did Lord Kilmore have a pressing need to elope to Gretna with his remarkably pretty but terribly spoiled, wealthy fiancee.

That all four should meet en route and agree to travel together was considered unexceptionable. But when Kilmore and Penny began to smell of April and May, they had little recourse but to wish Gretna Green were farther away.
