Melita Arnold had inherited the Bell Town News from her father, but her uncle was running the paper for her until she was experienced enough to take over. So Melita couldn't understand why Uncle Rufe hired a new rewrite man without talking to her first. Besides, there was something odd about Derrick Fleming. Why had he left a bigger paper to join the News? Why did he blow "hot" -- sweet and charming -- one minute, then "cold" -- bitter and cynical -- the next? And why was he given such a free hand -- to cut her fiance Jay Bower's copy to pieces, for instance? But Uncle Rufe evaded all questions -- suddenly going out of town and leaving Melita in charge. She should have been thrilled at the chance to show what she could do, but Jay had just quit the paper...leaving Melita torn -- between her new responsibility and the unhappy feeling that she was losing the man she loved...
