Each of the seven gunslingers would give his left arm for the reputation J.D. Rohr gained as a lawman but doesn't want. Instead, over a two-year period, they succumb to his lightning-fast draw and deadly accurate aim. But the constant pursuit by these and other wannabes forces J.D. to leave his hometown to spare it from danger, turning him into a drifter until he falls in love with the stunning Stephanie Van Shelton, beloved daughter of the wealthiest rancher and silver mine owner in Nevada. Taking refuge on the Van Shelton ranch under an assumed name, "Jesse Bodine" finds a tentative happiness that he knows all too well can be destroyed at any moment by exposure from the inconspicuousness he has so carefully fashioned.
