Thinking he has killed a man during the fight he was forced into, the gangly farm boy of seventeen escapes into the dark and lonely Texas plain with the McCabe brothers, sons of a rich carpetbagger, in hot pursuit.
As Jack flees, the McCabes turn their rage toward his family. Humiliated at being bested by the youngster, they attack his brother and mother and leave them for dead. News of the attack travels quickly to his Uncle John, a legendary West Texas gunman, who finds Jack in Dodge City.
