For Johnny and Maggie and their young family, the long journey West has been fraught with danger. They have been beset by hunger blistering heat, and bone-rattling chill. They have helped bring life into the world and have ushered it out. Even attacks by wild animals and hostile Indians have been weathered, and they have survived.

Nothing, however, has prepared them for the cruelest cut of all: treachery from within their own ranks that will put their lives at risk and will create a growing rift between them.
