This exciting story takes place in 1947 in the twin cites of Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri. This is where the father of the house goes to peer over livestock. Amidst family troubles the tornado area is always prominent in their minds. The women, Audrey and Lara Hawthorne, are two strong women bearing daunting problems during their everyday life. Take Audrey's husband Giles for example: she married him, on the rebound loving a brother; he blackmailed to leave her desiring the lovely Audrey for his wife. Lara has her own problems with her dates—pushy men. Hem, her Casanova brother, still pesters any woman he desires to sneak back to the coal mines in the back of the property against his dad's wishes that he become a farmer instead.
