A chilly winter mist rolled in from the ocean as Joellen James made her way along the boardwalk of Atlantic City, past darkened pleasure palaces and abandoned bath houses. Penniless and alone, Joellen was grateful for the opportunity to live in the infant resort and work as a "printer's devil" in her uncle's small shop. But when she arrived at the darkened frame house, she found no warming family. She found her uncle, slumped to the floor. Alone once more, in a hostile, unfriendly town, Joellen was astonished by the rush of warmth she felt when she met the handsome entrepreneur, Taylor Lorillard.
