"Highwaymen," was Amanda Winsted's disapproving label for the men brought in to work on the new road through the -- until then -- quiet little Vermont town to Burrbridge, and it took all the power of persuasion Babs Montgomery had to convince her conservative-minded aunt to take two of them in as boarders. The two were partners in a small but growing construction truckign firm: Dan Hallbrook, a soft-spoken, serious-minded Virginian, and Tom Sanders, a cheerful redhead with a roving eye that focused on Amanda's flighty blond daughter, Dolly. They joined two other boarders at Winsteds: widower George Weaver and his young son. George was Aunt Amanda's No. 1 choice as a husband for homemaker Babs -- steady, reliable, dependable. But Babs had her own ideas about what she wanted in a husband. And the new road had brought her the perfect candidate. The trouble was that, when it came to marriage, Dan Hallbrook was almost as conservative as Aunt Amanda!
