Crazy Aunt Vootch is impossible to live with anymore. So Amy and Joshua Baines set off for New York City to find their grandparents. The very night they run away, the children meet up with the wacky Mortimer Wintergreen and his amazing magic hat. What luck!

Amy and Joshua soon discover that the magic hat can give them anything they need—if it's in the mood. With its help, the children and Mortimer manage to escape all sorts of dangers, from outlaws to overactive geese to the vengeful Aunt Vootch, who's hot on their trail. But worse perils are to come, and even the magic hat may not be enough to save the three travelers!
