Brenda Lou Benson isn't aware her boyfriend is a killer until after she leaves him. Hours later, as she's leaving Spokane, her car catches fire. Bob Ballard, police chief from Winfield, Washington, is in Montana recovering from a job related injury when he rescues Brenda and takes her to his friend's mountain cabin, where he's been staying.
Brenda's boyfriend and his accomplice find them and try to smoke them out. The FBI arrives in time, but the killer and his accomplice escape. Bob convinces the FBI to let him take Brenda to Winfield, Washington, where they set a trap to capture the killer.
