I whirling around with a cry of alarm,
hitting my head on the ceiling of the kiln. A boulder had been shoved in front of the door. I was shut in! My hands dripped with perspiration as I tried to push the boulder away. It was useless, and I began to shake uncontrollably.
I heard footsteps outside and then they faded. The floor grew strangely warmer beneath me and even before I breathed the first whiffs of smoke through the chin holes, the awful knowledge was upon me.
A fire had been lighted in the bottom of the kiln. I was to be baked alive!
