Men and mages have tamed the world. The great monsters have all been vanquished. The Creator's Throne has been plundered and its power divided and lost. The Fire Womb has been closed so no more wild magic is born into the world.
There is one great mystery left in the world. The Incarnadine Stair, appearing to have been carved from a single great ruby, rises into the sky and beyond. Its ageless perfection and the obvious power of its enchantments has called to men and mages since it was first discovered.
This is the story of the Stair and a gentleman known simply as the traveler. Different from other men and mages, the traveler believes the world is a poor and barren place bereft of its wild magic. He is uninterested in the Stair's power, but he wants to know what waits at the Stair's end. He believes the Stair was created to be climbed, and he hopes what lies at the end will help him bring back wild magic.
